What is rhinitis?

Rhinitis, also known as coryza. Coryza is irritation and inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose.



There are many types of rhinitis. The most common are acute rhinitis(mainly allergic), which is usually caused by allergens, viral illness, or seasonal rhinitis.

What causes rhinitis?

The most common causes of rhinitis are- • viruses, bacteria



• Irritants or Allergens -Pollens,fumes,odors,mold,dust,animal dander.

• Smoke

• Certain foods or spices



• Environmental changes

• Temperature

• Hormonal changes

• Certain medicines and overuse of topical nose sprays

Triggeres - airborne allergens such as pollen and dander.



What are the symptoms of rhinitis?

• stuffy nose, runny nose, sneezing, and post-nasal drip, Itchy nose, throat, eyes, and ears, fatigue, Snoring

• Breathing through the mouth

• Ear infections

Allergic rhinitis may cause additional symptoms- when allergens in the air trigger the release of histamine in the body. Histamine causes itching, swelling, and fluid to build up in the fragile linings of the nasal passages, sinuses, and eyelids.The inflammation results a large amounts of mucus, commonly producing a runny nose, as well as a stuffy nose and post-nasal drip.



How is rhinitis diagnosed?

history and physical examination.

Some sign are- • Swollen tissues inside the nose

• Mouth breathing

• Dark circles under the eyes

• Creases under the eyes

How is rhinitis treated?

Treatments for rhinitis- • Nose sprays

• Antihistamines

• Decongestants

• Medicines for asthma symptoms

• Allergy shots(immunotherapy)

Note- Avoidance of the allergens that are causing the problem is the best treatment.
