Eye Flu (Conjunctivitis): Causes, Symptoms & Ayurveda for Eye Flu Prevention

The eyes, often known as the windows to the soul, play an important part in our daily lives because they allow us to see and connect with the world around us. However, these delicate organs are at risk of many kinds of health problems, including eye flu. Many of us have had conjunctivitis, also known as "pink eye."

Eye Flu Causes: According to Ayurveda, eye flu is often caused by an imbalance in the "Pitta" dosha, which represents the body's fire and water components. Excessive heat, pollution, and allergens can increase Pitta, resulting in eye inflammation and irritation.



Also, poor hygiene, sharing personal items, and touching the eyes with dirty hands are all factors that contribute to the spread of the eye flu.

Eye Flu Symptoms: Common eye flu symptoms include redness, a burning sensation irritation, a watery discharge, and sensitivity to light. According to Ayurveda, these symptoms indicate an increase in Pitta dosha in the eyes.

Tips for Prevention of eye flu:  Preventing eye flu involves practicing proper hygiene and taking care to prevent infection spread:



•If you have eye flu, stay at home to avoid spreading it to others.

• Wash your hands regularly, especially after touching your face or contacting someone with eye flu.

• Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands.



• Avoid sharing personal goods such as towels, makeup, and contact lenses.

•Protect your eyes from excessive pollution and sun exposure by wearing sunglasses and staying hydrated.

Ayurvedic Remedies and Practices for eye flu:

1. Triphala: Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is widely used in Ayurveda for its cleansing and detoxifying properties. To relieve inflammation and discomfort, make a triphala water infusion and use it as an eye wash.

2. Ghee: Applying ghee(pure butter) to the eyes will help lubricate and soothe dryness. Ghee can also be used to relieve irritation in the eyes.



3. Cold compress: Using a cold compress composed of rose water or aloe vera gel to calm the irritation and reduce redness in the eyes will assist. These cooling substance help to balance Pitta.

4. Netra Basti: In this specific Ayurvedic treatment, a well of dough is formed around the eyes and filled with warm, medicated oil. Netra Basti nourishes the eyes while also reducing inflammation and improving the ocular tissues.

5. Ayurvedic herbal formulations such as "Triphala Ghrita" or "Rose water with honey" can be used as eye drops to relieve irritation and promote healing.

6. Diet and Lifestyle: Consume cooling foods such as cucumber,  coriander, mint, and coconut to balance Pitta dosha.

Avoid spicy, acidic, and fried meals since they can aggravate eye flu symptoms. Adequate sleep, stress management, and good hygiene are all important in preventing and controlling eye flu.
