Proper diagnosis is essential for prescribing the correct treatment for disease. The disease is examined with reference to the following-

1. Nidana( Etiology)



2. Purva rupa (Premonitory signs and symptoms)

3. Rupa( Actual signs and symptoms)

4. Upasaya ( Exploratory therapy)



5. Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Taken together, these are called panchnidana ( five-fold examination) of a disease and they help the physician to arrive at the correct diagnosis of the ailment. In ayurvedic texts, while describing disease, these aspects are given in the beginning, Thereafter follows the description of the treatment.
